Etymology
Attested as early as in the 1711 混効験集 Konkoukenshuu Okinawan dictionary (p. 13), under the spelling ヤツ yatsu. Cognate with standard Japanese やっつ【八つ】 yattsu "eight".
Historical Ryukyuan attestations
- Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo Island, in the Japan Sea (1818), by Herbert John Clifford, records "Eight. Kwat'chee, or fat'chee (Loo-Choo); Eeyat'see (Japan)".
