Cognate with Kagoshima しょてっ shoteq; Okinawan すてぃち sutichi and すーてぃち suutichi; and standard Japanese そてつ【蘇鉄】 sotetsu "sago palm".
Historical Ryukyuan attestations
- Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo Island, in the Japan Sea (1818), by Herbert John Clifford, records "Shrub, with leaves resembling a palm tree, probably sago tree. Sootítsee" and "The sootitsee (sago tree) pricked me. Sootítsee wang tseéchoong yátee".
