Etymology

Cognate to Fukuoka ぐうず guuzu, ごうず gouzu and ごうつ goutsu; Kagoshima くっ kuq and くし kushi; and the now-obsolete Japanese term こうず kouzu (historically written こうづ koudzu) "pond turtle".

Historical attestations:

  • Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam (1603), aka Nippo Jisho (日葡辞書), records "côzzu" translated as "(freshwater) turtle".
