Cognate to Kagoshima たんご tango and たご tago ; Okinawan たーぐ taagu; and the now-obsolete Japanese term たご【担桶】 tago "bucket, pail".

Historical Japanese attestations

  • 日葡辞書 Nippo Jisho (1603) records "tago", translated as "buckets for carrying water", and includes the sentence "tagouo ninǒ" "to carry buckets on both shoulders".

Historical Ryukyuan attestations

  • Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo Island, in the Japan Sea (1818), by Herbert John Clifford, records "Bucket. Tágoo".

Discussion:

  • Historically, this type of bucket was made of wood and was often carried in pairs over one's shoulders using a carrying pole.
