Etymology

Ultimately a compound of ふぃさ【足・膝】 fisa "foot; leg"; the genitive particle ん -n; and a word resembling *bira~bera. Compare the Nakijin cognate ぴさんびゃー pisanbyaa. In northern Japan, we also find the forms あしのへら【足のへら】 ashi no hera "top of the foot" in Kazuno (Aomori); あすのべら asunobera and あすべら asubera in Iwate and Aomori; and あしのふぇら ashi no fera in Akita.

Historical Ryukyuan attestations

  • Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo Island, in the Japan Sea (1818), by Herbert John Clifford, records "Foot. Shánna", "Foot, the sole of the. Shánna watta (lit. belly of the foot)" and "Heel of the foot. Shánna-a-roo".
