Historically attested under the spelling あばてぬ abatenu. Kagoshima variants include あばてん abaten, あばてんね abatenne, あばてんなか abatennaka, and あばてなく abatenaku "a lot, many". ばっと batto is recorded as a babytalk form. Likely cognate with standard Japanese おびただしい【夥しい】 obitadashii "a large number (of)".
