つちのこ・ツチノコ【槌の子】

tsuchinoko

Definition

Noun

  1. Tsuchinoko ("Hammer's Spawn") is a legendary Japanese viper-like snake with a large girth, that most closely resembles a legless, large skink.

Etymology

Derived from the noun つち【槌】 tsuchi "hammer", the genitive particle の no, and the diminutive suffix 【子】 ko.

Notes

In the same fashion as the Loch Ness Monster, the Tsuchinoko has been variously reported throughout Japan, but remains unconfirmed and accounts are largely exaggerated. Another popular name for the creature used in northern Japan is Bachihebi.
