ゆるキャラ

yurukyara

Definition

Noun

  1. A large mascot or costumed character with a seemingly gentle, soft and appeasing appearance, often used to promote a company, product, service, region, city or other.

Etymology

Derived from the root of the adjective ゆるい【緩い】 yurui, meaning "gentle; soft" or "loose; lenient"; and compounded with キャラ kyara, an abbreviation for the word キャラクター kyarakutaa "character". The popularization of the word is often attributed to Jun Miura (三浦 純), a Japanese cartoonist and illustrator, though its origin may stem from elsewhere.
