Derived from the form せび sebi, cognate to standard Japanese せみ【蝉】 semi "cicada", and its rarer variants そみ somi and しおみ shiomi (as in 虚蝉 utsusomi ~ utsushiomi "cicada molt; cicada shell"). Ultimately from Chinese 【蝉・蟬】 (cf. Mandarin chán; Cantonese sim4 or sin4; and the Korean reflex 선 soen and Japanese せん sen).
