Etymology

Derived from いっ【生・生っ】 , meaning "living; life" (cognate to standard Japanese いき【生・生き】 iki); and the rendaku form of  たまし【魂】 tamashi "soul; spirit" (standard Japanese たましい【魂】 tamashii).

Notes

Alternatively spelt いっだましい iddamashii under the influence of standard Japanese. いっだまし【生魂】 iddamashi is also the name of an alcoholic beverage produced in Kagoshima.
