Cognate with Miyako-Yaeyama ばた bata "stomach, belly"; Yonaguni ばだ bada; the Amami-Okinawan variant わたー wataa; and the standard word わた【腸】 wata meaning "guts, bowels", now considered archaic.

  • Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo Island, in the Japan Sea (1818), by Herbert John Clifford, records "Belly. Wátta" and "Belly, big. Wátta mágesa".
