Etymology

From vowel raising and coalescence of the older form ごそうやう【御総様】 gosouyau, composed from the honorific prefix 【御】 go, the word そう【総】 sou "a whole, all", and the suffix やう【様】 yau. Cognate with the very rare Japanese term そうよう【総容・総様】 souyou, used to refer to a group of people assembled or seated.
