らふてー【羅火腿】

rafutee

Pronunciation: [ɾaɸuteː]

Definition

Noun

  1. Rafute: an Okinawan dish consisting mainly of pork belly stewed in soy sauce, awamori and brown sugar.

Etymology

Of Chinese origin. Likely cognate with or closely related to the similar dish called トンポーロウ【東坡肉】 tonpoorou in Japanese (also read ドンポーロウ donpoorou), meaning "dongpo pork; tungpo pork", itself from the Chinese term 【东坡肉・東坡肉】 (cf. Mandarin dōngpōròu). The latter term seems to be named after the Song Dynasty poet Su Dong Po (1037–1101).
