  1. A saying used to express regret for bothering others, especially when or before entering an occupied room or another person's home: "May I come in?", "Pardon the intrusion...", "Sorry for bothering, but may I enter?", "Do you mind if I come in?"

Etymology

Derived from ごめん【御免・ご免】 gomen, roughly meaning "pardon" or "permission", and the imperative form of the auxiliary verb なんす【為んす】 nansu "to do", itself related to the standard verbs なす【為す】 nasu "to do, to become", なさる【為さる】 nasaru (cf. なさい【為さい】 nasai), and なる【為る】 naru.
