Etymology

Formed from the noun 【気】 ki, meaning "self, spirit, mind and heart", the accusative marker を wo, and the imperative verb form つけ【付け】 tsuke, meaning "set, put on, place, fix".

Notes

The expression きをつけ【気を付け】 kiotsuke is most commonly used in schools and martial art dojos. At the sound of said expression, students are expected to stand up and assume a straight posture. The teacher, instructor or lead student will then follow up by shouting out れい【礼】 rei, where all members will be expected to bow as a sign of respect.
