Etymology

Derived from the noun ないち【内地】 naichi, a term used to distinguish the main portion of Japan from namely Okinawa and Hokkaido. The term fell out of use in standard Japanese following World War II, but still remains used in the Ryukyu Islands. Suffixed by the ending あー -aa, meaning "person, people".
