とーぬちゅ【唐ぬ人】

toonuchu

Definition

Noun

  1. A person from China or of Chinese descent. Chinese person; Chinese people.

Etymology

Derived from とー【唐】 too "China", the genitive particle ぬ nu, and the suffix ちゅ【人】 chu "person, people". Attested in the 1896 沖縄語典 Okinawagoten, by Masayo Nakamoto (p. 61), written as たうぬちゆ taunuchiyu. Note that Japanese spelling was reformed in 1946, so the actual word would have already been pronounced as it is today, toonuchu.
