おい【俺】 : oi | define meaning
Region: Kyushu (Kagoshima)
- First person pronoun: I, me, myself
The pronoun おい oi derives from the form おれ ore through a process called sonorant gliding. When followed by a particle starting with a vowel, the final い -i will resyllabify itself so that おい oi followed by the topic marker (w)a will become おや oya.
Contrary to the standard Japanese pronoun おれ ore, the Kagoshima form おい oi is not limited to (young) boys. Rather, it is more neutral sounding and may be used by people of all ages to the same extent as わたし【私】 watashi or ぼく【僕】 boku.
