Cognate to Okinawan きが kiga "injury; wound; harm; damage". The term historically stems from the root of the classical Japanese verb けがる【汚る・穢る】 kegaru "to become dirty; to become stained; to be defiled", which became けがれる【汚れる・穢れる】 kegareru (ibid.) in modern Japanese.
