  1. (Buddhism) Mara (or Māra), a demon that attempted to seduce Buddha with visions of beautiful women. Mara is generally considered to be the personification of temptation and impulse and an obstacle to spiritual practise. (See also: マーラ maara)

Etymology

Of Sanskrit origin. First translated as "membrum virile" by James Curtis Hepburn in A Japanese-English and English-Japanese Dictionary (1872), page 301.
