Etymology

The Kanji for this term are considered Ateji, meaning they bear no relation to the meaning, but are used for their pronunciation. Other former spellings include 莫迦, 母嫁, 馬嫁 and 破家. No exact origin has been accepted, but different theories propose that the term originates from either Chinese, Sanskrit or Japanese itself.

Notes

The term ばか【馬鹿】 baka is common in ordinary Japanese and is not considered as pejorative as its English counterparts.
