Etymology

Originally used to refer to wheels, as well as wagons and chariots for hauling and transportation, the term was recently extended to include all types of superceding vehicles with the introduction of modern automobiles. The term is cognate to Kagoshima くいま kuima; Nakanojima くーま kuuma; and Takara Island かるま karuma "vehicle; car; wheel". It is also cognate to the rare variants くろま kuroma and くら kura, and is semantically related to くるくる kurukuru "whirling, spinning" and くるめく【眩めく】 kurumeku "to spin". The term may ultimately stem from the Sanskrit word  कर्म karma "cycle; wheel".

Notes

In compound words, くるま kuruma is normally replaced by its Sino-Japanese reading しゃ -sha.
